SOLD Go Ai Wei Oil on canvas by Yianni Johns –  ready to hang this painting was inspired on my June, July 2014 Beijing artist residency. While there I organised with the compound driver to take me to the studio of China’s most famous dissident artist Ai Wei Wei the day before I was supposed to go. During the night before I was supposed to go I was visited by some important people who advised me that if I ever want to come back to China I cancel my visit to Ai Wei Wei. So I did to far away from home to end up in trouble with my host nation. Who apart from that were very hospitable and welcoming. In the imagined painting of a real place the roof has the most beautiful Chinese writing* in the building window we meet Ai Wei Wei, he is nude emulating one of his previous art stunts.

  • In all my “roof Word” paintings I avoided getting a translation only relying on the beauty of the text aesthetic.
