The Western Plateau: Australia’s Vast and Ancient Heartland
Another name for the Australian Outback: Great Western Plateau
The Western Plateau, also called the Australian Shield, spans roughly two-thirds of the continent, covering an impressive 2.7 million square kilometers—about the size of continental Europe. This vast, arid expanse stretches across large portions of Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory.
Climate With annual rainfall between 189–398 millimeters, the Western Plateau is one of Australia’s driest regions, shaped by its harsh, sun-drenched climate.
Landforms and Landscapes The Plateau features striking individual plateaus such as the Kimberley, Hamersley, and Yilgarn, along with rugged mountain ranges like the Hamersley, Musgrave, and MacDonnell. It also hosts sweeping desert landscapes, including the iconic Gibson, Tanami, Canning, Great Sandy, and Great Victoria Deserts.
Monoliths and Ancient Heritage This region is home to awe-inspiring monoliths, like Uluru, rising from the arid terrain as powerful symbols of Australia’s ancient past. The Western Plateau itself is over 500 million years old, with some of its rocks dating back more than 3 billion years.

Explore artwork inspired by the enduring spirit of this remarkable landscape, capturing its timeless beauty, textures, and vibrant desert hues.
