Hieroglyphic Skyline by Shirley Dougan

This is an original artwork created in acrylic paints. Landscape painting of trees in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia. Painted sides,It’s on board and is ready to hang. The sides are painted black.

This is a landscape painting of a line of trees in the countryside near Seville in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia. Heading towards Melbourne, you go through the small town of Seville. A few kilometres from the town the road bends to the right and there on a rise to your left there’s this line of trees. I’ve wanted to paint them for some time and this is one of three different paintings I have done of them.

Most of my painting is done using hand-shaped tools (made from recycled industrial waste) and paintbrushes to make multi-layered artworks. This is part of my everyday attempts to re-use and recycle materials. I’m attracted by the haphazard mark-making, patterns and textures that the tools make and the exciting possibilities they present.

I love the way that colours change depending upon which colours they are near; I love the random parts that occur from just putting paint down. I like that moment when the whole thing comes together (although not always) – partly through intention and partly due to happy accidents. Mostly, though, I think it’s the journey of it and the happy feelings when other people like my work. I like that.

In all my artworks, Golden brand paints are my choice. I love their highly-pigmented colours. I have used a gloss varnish (over an isolation coat, which means that the varnish can be removed without damage to the paint) to enhance those colours even more.
