Io’s favourite handbag by Karen Chappelow 100x135cm
Acrylic and gold leaf on canvas-ready to hang
Hera, a Greek god and Zeus’ wife, was tired of Zeus’s philandering having discovered Zeus had transformed himself into a cloud and had his way with Io (a beautiful mortal woman. Zeus wanting to hide her from his enraged wife turns Io into a white heifer. Hera demands the cow as a present and Zeus, unable to deny her and as a sign of love for her, gives in.  Hera sends Argus the giant with 100 eyes to guard Io. Zeus to free Io sends Hermes -messenger of the gods to slay Argus. Hera sends a gadfly to torment Io driving her mad and causing her to wander the world. Io eventually reached Egypt where she is changed to human form by Zeus and gave Zeus a few kids..
In honour of Argus service, Hera is said to have created the first peacock using the 100 eyes from Argus and placing them on the feathers of the bird. The peacock symbolises immortality and beauty and often references vanity.
My version is an attempt to redress the balance for Io and also a statement about vanity and revenge. Io holding her Hermes handbag and embracing her peacock-Argus.
A Greek God, his servant and a white heifer walk into a bar.
Hermes says ‘Hey Io shake your rump for me’.
Argus quips ‘I don’t want to see that steak moo’ve!’.
Hermes replies ‘I can fix that- the god bought the peacock a beer’.
