JERRYWERRI by Tillian –

“Realities mingle as time pauses at the Winter Solstice, which was when this picture was painted. The bird (native pigeon) symbolizes prophecy – its song (a low thrumming ooom oom) calls forth the sun. ‘Jerriwerri’ is the indigenous name for the rocky bluff at Callala Bay, also known as ‘Red Rock'” Tillian

In ‘JERRIWERRI’, I capture a coastal landscape where time, spirit, and ecology converge through rhythmically abstracted form. A sinuous red branch—or ancestral path—threads from the dense undergrowth to the shoreline, guiding the viewer past a native pigeon nestled in foliage toward a moonlit headland and the tidal edge. Here, I eschew linear perspective in favour of a curvilinear, intuitive spatiality: a topography of inner and outer worlds layered into one plane. The painting’s chromatic range is rich with symbolism. Verdant greens and rusted ochres yield to sweeping bands of turquoise and ultramarine, evoking a coastline shaped by memory and dream as much as by tide. Above the ocean, a sequence of moon-like discs tracks the passage of time—perhaps referencing seasonal cycles, spiritual renewal, or celestial navigation.

This painting becomes a kind of mnemonic map, offering not a single moment but an unfolding continuum. Through its lyrical abstraction and symbolic density, ‘JERRIWERRI’ reflects a profound connection to land and time. It is less a “scene” than a cosmology—where bird, branch, hill, and tide speak in the shared language of continuity and custodianship.
