Just under the Bridge by Jackie Moss

This artwork is from a series of sixteen artworks I painted during Melbourne lockdown period of 2021.

This painting is a familiar view for walkers, bike riders and those travelling along the Yarra River and beneath Hoddle Bridge.  The icon Melbourne landmark of the Nylex sign and malting silos reflect and create swirling patterns on the water surface – particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset.

I view the silos at close range from our apartment, always aware of the different light and shadows rolling across them from throughout the day.  Here, the warmth of the sunset glowing on the silos is reflected upon the Yarra River beautifully distorting and twisting the iconic Nylex sign on the water surface

During lockdown, I noticed many discarded timber panels destined for the scrap bin and was able to source these by contacting the builder/developer of the the site (now both in liquidation). I enjoyed preparing the panels for painting and was delighted to work with the texture and imperfections of the timber which retain their visibility in the work, including the knots which are visible within the timber.

I loved using bold applications of colour to capture the colours, textures and character of this historic part of Melbournes landscape.
