In every story there are archetypes, characters in the story that have a function or a role that enable the story to be told. These Archetypes occur most frequently in stories.

The herald’s job is to warn and challenge. Announce the course of the story, the call to adventure. The labyrinth being the home of the Minotaur. Theseus set a challenge to slay the Minotaur. Given a ball of wool from Ariadne daughter of the king of Minos (the issuer of the edict) to assist Theseus in his ability to find his way out of the labyrinth. The minotaur could be a hero or a bastard in this story. It wasn’t his fault he was born of bull and human- his diet young men and women from Athens. I like to think he absconded with the wool and knitted himself a nice scarf.
