Kookaburra sits no 7 by Jackie Moss – ‘Kookaburra sits #7’ is an original artwork painted in oils on a timber panel

This original artwork is one of a series of Kookaburras painted for an exhibition of works called ‘Wild Things’, showcasing the local native habitat and wildlife I enjoy when visiting regional Gippsland, Victoria.  The curious and cheeky Kookaburras are frequent visitors to our garden.  I love waking up to the dawn laughter of this iconic Australian bird!  The Kookaburra, Dacelo novaeguinea, is known as Gaagum (gah-goom) by First Nations people.  Part of the Kingfisher family, our gorgeous Kooka’s are a very clever and intelligent bird – quick to identify food opportunities and a ‘take-away’ snack, particularly from unsuspecting humans!

Throughout my travels in Australia I’ve collected quite a library of photos of Kookaburras which became inspiration for this series.  Friends and family have also shared images with me.  Although similar, each bird is very unique in the variations of colour on their plumage often dependent on their age and size.  Most amusing though is their watchful stare and curious posture.

Each original Kookaburra painting in this series is unique, painted in oils on wooden timber panel.  I strive to capture the texture and authentic colours of the feathers and beak, the feathered brow and deep glassy eyes.  I hope their laughter comes to mind when enjoying this piece!

A modest size perfect for all interior aesthetics or a unique gift/souvenir of Australian wildlife

This bright little study is signed on the back, ready to hang and sure to brighten up any small space in your home.
