Listen – The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves by Susanne Bianchi

This is a line from a poem by Humbert Wolf seemed so appropriate the other day when I was walking amongst some glorious gum trees. The day was windy and the air was indeed wild with gum leaves, they were twirling everywhere. Such a wonderful sight to behold.

Instant inspiration for this very Australian painting. I do love gum trees and have painted them many times over the years.

Here I use multiple layers of under colour on the canvas to give it interest, body and depth. I then added soft warm whites and greys in swathes of colour as background to suggest the bark of the Australian Gum against which the leaves dance. The leaves are in green, olive and yellow ochre; they pirouette in the wind before falling to the ground.

Acrylic paint on stretched canvas, sealed with a coat of high gloss varnish. Unframed but It is ready to hang.
