Lovey Dovey – by Kerry-Anne Knibbs – Hello, and thank you for taking a closer look!

It’s a sad reality that these ancient, revered birds are often reduced to the nickname ‘bin chickens.’ In truth, they are simply birds trying to survive in the concrete jungle we’ve built. They embody resilience, adaptation, and the spirit of survival in a world that often overlooks their beauty and significance. These birds deserve more than the label we’ve given them — they are living symbols of nature’s persistence, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

To truly understand their value, we must look beyond the surface and delve into the rich tapestry of mythology and symbolism that surrounds these creatures. The ancient cultures revered birds as messengers between the earthly and spiritual realms. Ibis were seen as symbols of knowledge, wisdom, transformation, and communication with the divine. But there’s another layer to their symbolism—Ibis are associated with romance, love, and unity. The title ‘Lovey Dovey’ speaks to their gentle and affectionate nature, representing not only resilience but also tenderness and connection.

In this artwork, I’ve chosen to embrace these dual aspects of the bird’s symbolism—resilience in the face of adversity and the beauty of love and unity. By calling this piece Lovey Dovey, I invite you to reflect on how these birds, often misunderstood, also carry messages of romance, harmony, and the interconnectedness of all life. It’s an exploration of how love, in its many forms, can thrive even in the most unexpected places.
