Magpie Mate-Ship – by Kerry-Anne Knibbs – Hello, and thank you for taking a closer look!

I love the melodious “dawn chorus’ of the magpie, an iconic reminder of our Australian mate-ship. The Magpie was the original Western Suburbs Football Club emblem. My uncle John played first-grade for the Magpies during their golden era of 1955 – 1963. He spent many years after his playing days developing younger players and fostering talent for the Magpies. If we go back to Aboriginal stories, magpies are credited with creating the very first sunrise through their collaboration. The legacy of mate-ship is strong in Australia. Ultimately this painting honours our mates and the notion of friendship while symbolising growth, strength and flexibility though the strong wood element that is featured.
