Mary Tudor by Josephine Duval

A painting that provokes conversation and controversy.

Oil, paper and gold leaf on canvas.

The inspiration for this piece is strong women in history, that despite all odds succeed beyond anyone’s expectations.

Mary was a women to be respected and feared during her 5 year reign as Mary I of England, Queen of England and Ireland for five years.

Mary made vigorous attempts to reverse the English Reformation, which began during the reign of her father, King Henry VIII. Her attempt to restore to Church property confiscated in the previous two reigns was largely thwarted by Parliament but, during her five-year reign, more than 280 religious dissenters were burned at the stake, leading her Protestant opponents to label her “Bloody Mary.

Every detail in this painting has been specifically chosen to represent her strength, Christianity, ties to Ireland and eventually her metamorphous to Queen of England with the key to the throne..
