Additional Information

‘Meeting Place’ by Meg Shaw is painted with respect to First Nations peoples and their traditions.

The painting is a contemporary landscape worked on a handmade, stretched canvas. It’s framed in a handmade, upcycled, plantation Tasmanian Oak frame measuring approximately 96 x 96 cm.

The style is contemporary expressionism. It is multilayered, contrasting and painted mainly with brushes, plus some palette knife work, finger painting and dabbing rag effects. I use a high quality, Australian made, environmentally friendly acrylic paint product. I protect the surface with several layers of lacquer which also brings out the vivid colours of this beautiful paint.

The inspiration for ‘Meeting Place’ comes from my personal impressions of a scene at The You Yangs (meaning big hill), Wadawurrung Country, near Geelong. The aspect is the view towards the Brisbane Ranges. The You Yangs has clusters of imposing granite rocks which appear like statues or monuments to me.The feel is almost tangible when I take a walk there. There’s also a sense of an ancient narrative taking place. Traditionally, indigenous groups met on this site for large gatherings. My painting attempts to depict the atmosphere, both physically and emotionally, that might have been present during these meetings. There are symbolic elements, as well which I always leave to viewers to interpret as they wish. Some comments I’ve received, so far are:

“I want to get lost in this landscape.”

“Took my breath away.”

“Soulful.”

“An amazing painting. The scene brings back memories of my childhood.”

“Evocative mood and what seems to be a deep timeless communication …”

The photos show the finished painting, close-ups, the frame and in situ. Please note that the situ shots are virtual and meant to show what the painting might look like hanging on a wall.

Meeting Place will be sent to you via Auspost. As I live in rural Tasmania now, please allow a little more time for postage. Thank you.
