Judy Watson Napangardi
Born 1925 Yarungkanji, Mt Doreen Station

Judy is a senior artist working at Yuendumu 400km west of Alice Springs. A vibrant painter, Judy is renowned for her abstract infusions of intense and sometimes dramatic colour combinations (think lime green, pink and mauve) into the traditional Warlpiri Women’s stories, such as Hairstring and Mina Mina. Her subject matter commonly reflects Mini Mina (her ancestral country) or Dreamings connected to it, including Karnta (Women), Kanakurlangu (Digging Stick), Ngalyipi (Snake Vine), Yunkaranyi (Honey Ant), Jintiparnta (Native Truffle) and hair belt. Whilst drawing her content from a primordial story base – exploring the sacredness of place and song in her culture – Judy is at the forefront of a move towards its abstract rendering, presenting canvases of contemporary diversity. Her work is held in a number of respective public and private collections, both nationally and internationally.
