Apologies in advance for the playful title—let me explain. I have a black Bowerbird that visits my yard, and he’s always been a stealthy figure, swooping low along the fence line to stay out of sight. His bower is tucked away beneath a stunning magnolia tree, which looks almost stunted, its branches drooping low to the ground like an umbrella without a handle. It’s a secret hidden world, a nod to the James Bond character of the bird world.

Yes, Bowerbirds are the bachelors of the avian world, each with their own “bachelor pad” filled with blue treasures. This made me think of the Shaggy song, “Mr. Lover, Lover…”—”She says I’m Mr. Romantic, and me fantastic!” But let’s get serious for a moment: the precision, detail, and craftsmanship that some Bowerbird species demonstrate is truly breathtaking. Without a doubt, the Bowerbird represents intelligence, design, creativity, abundance, treasures, and yes, romance.

All of his incredible creative efforts are focused on a singular goal: courting a female. He is, without a doubt, Mr. Romantic!
