Additional Information

These monochromatic landscapes rendered in a style suggestive of both expressionism and a slightly abstracted realism. Created on high quality hand stretched canvas and stretcher frames can be hung as is or can be framed to your personal taste. The limited palette of blacks’ greys and off whites create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The impasto mediums used and sgraffito (Italian word meaning, ‘to scratch’) techniques engaged have given these pieces a subtle 3d quality. The contrasts between light and shadow creates a striking mood that is both haunting and evocative. Any of these artworks would be a valuable addition to any collection focusing on contemporary landscape paintings exploring themes of environmental awareness or the enduring beauty of the natural world.

These modern landscape paintings are a depiction of Thirlmere Lakes national park, Dharawal Land. They have been created from my reference photos I took in this magic setting, the beautiful and untouched land that surrounds the Lake Couridjah, a natural waterway in the Wollondilly Shire. A place where I and many other local children and families used to swim at summertime. These monochromatic pieces are my personal response to the somewhat reverent energy of dusk at the lakes when the “Magic Happens”.

Chalk et al 2007 concluded that the meaning for the word ‘Couridjah was actually “A place for Aboriginal Magic”.

At present there are 3 titles in this series;

  • Old Country 1; Thirlmere Lakes, Dharawal Land.
  • Old Country 2; Where the Banksia Grow.
  • Old Country 3; Lake Couridjah, Where the Magic happens. Won (3rd Place in the 2025 Wollondilly Arts Alive Competition).
