Oystercatcher 1 by Lyn Graham

This painting is part of my Habitats > Shore series. It’s a watercolour on cotton paper.

The creatures along the shoreline fascinate me, especially the crabs and birds.

I love the birds who perch on the rocky headlands ever watchful for food and intruders. Some of my favourites are oystercatchers and cormorants.

Oystercatcher 1 was inspired by the Sooty Oystercatchers I would see around the shores at Bruny Island Quarantine Station. They would work along the banks and in the late afternoon come to rest on the jetty in Quarantine Bay.

I also love the flocks of migratory birds such as the Eastern Curlews and Bar-tailed Godwits who travel thousands of kilometres each year to be on our shores. It is shameful that we are destroying their habitats.
