Pale Myrtle‘ by Meg Shaw

The painting was inspired by the masses of stunning white flowering Myrtle shrubs (Melaleuca Linariifolia) I saw on a summer trip, driving through New South Wales, a number of years ago. Colloquially, they’re called Snow in Summer. I’ve seen them since in my area of Victoria and now, I always associate them with a traditional Christmas, as the flowers look like heavy layers of snow resting on the boughs of trees. (The flowers are about as close to snow as we’ll ever see in most areas of Australia, especially in summer.)

My interpretation comes from a mix of remembered images. The approach is a combination of abstract, contemporary landscape and naïve art.

The colours I’ve used are the rusts and ochres, as seen in parts of NSW, along with complimentary blues, yellows, mauves, black and greys. The dominant tones are variations of whites that represent the creamy coloured myrtle flowers. It’s a mixed media piece – acrylics, inks and charcoal. My tools, as always, are: brushes, palette knives, dabbing rags and fingers. I’ve tried to portray the movement and atmosphere I felt while walking amongst these beautiful shrubs.

Photos include ‘painting in progress’ image. Please note: the situ photos are virtual and are intended to show what the painting might look like hanging on a wall.

‘Pale Myrtle’ has been painted on a landscape orientated, stretched canvas and measures approximately 95 x 63.5 x 4 cm. It’s framed in Tasmanian Oak and is ready to hang.

This painting will be sent via a courier or Auspost. It will be protected in a crate,  wrapped in recycled bubble wrap and packed in recycled cardboard. As I live in rural Tasmania now, please allow a little more time for delivery. Thank you.
