‘Petticoat Green’.
We were walking along beautiful Penola, a historic Victorian town and I saw a signpost called “Petticoat Lane” and straight away knew I wanted to paint that memory. Here are parts of a lovely old poem to go with my painting.
“A petticoat is a tender thing,
Tender as love or dew,
Perhaps it is piece of an angels garb,
That has sometime fallen thru.
For there be gates in the distant sky that elder seers have seen,
And you, you have known them human man,
So paint me a petticoat green…..
Paint me all, that the children laugh,
On a long white afternoon,
Paint me all that the old men know, as they talk to the setting moon.
Paint me age that is young again,
And believe in the fairies unseen…
‘Twill all come easily to you human man,
If you paint me a petticoat green……..
