Picnic by Rosemary Legat –

Acrylic paint, acrylic ink, spray paint, printing ink, ink pens, artist made stencils and a collage piece on 300gsm mixed media paper.

The Australian White Ibis is a wading bird of the ibis family and is widespread across much of Australia.

Known affectionately to many as the “bin chicken” due to their habit of rummaging in our garbage as their presence increases in our urban environment.  They love to feed on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and human scraps.  Unfortunately these birds have come to be regarded as a problem species in some areas as a result of their scavenging activities.

I have a soft spot for this native  bird and find it a spectacular sight when I see them flying in a group, soaring across our open skies.

In recent times a congregation of them have been seen spread out over a large, partially flooded, oval next to our gym each morning for a number of times.

With kind thoughts of bin chickens and marshy, watery environments I selected one of my multiple layered intuitive painted base to develop into a imaginary world for my ibis to live.

Picnic is a light, bright and quirky piece even if it contains a touch of sadness with one of my birds rummaging for rubbish left behind by careless humans.

As Picnic requires framing my gallery photos include examples of how she could look framed and hung.

In situ images are for display purposes only and may not be to scale.

I create organically therefore I did not trim back the rough edge running down the left-hand side of the page.  If you prefer a clean edge, you have the option of having the border trimmed back or covered during your chosen framing method.
