Pilbara Vivid is inspired by the vast, open plains and intense colour of the Pilbara. The deep rust reds and burnt ochres dominate the canvas, speaking of ancient land, heat, and endurance. Small pockets of vivid blue water sit low and quietly within the landscape, offering moments of relief and stillness against the strength of the earth. Above, a soft, pale sky stretches wide, giving the work a sense of space and breath.

I worked instinctively and loosely, allowing layers of colour and mark-making to build the feeling of place rather than describe it literally. Subtle creams and muted greens hint at sparse vegetation, while rough, expressive strokes reflect the rawness and resilience of this environment. The simplicity of the composition was important to me, letting colour, texture, and contrast carry the emotion of the land.

This work reflects my ongoing connection to the Australian landscape and my fascination with its contrasts — harsh yet calm, bold yet quietly beautiful. Pilbara Vivid invites the viewer to pause and feel the balance between dry, powerful earth and the cooling presence of water, finding calm within a rugged and remote place.
