Promises of Life in Ambers by Meg Shaw

This original painting is inspired by a collection of remembered and imagined images from the land surrounding Ikara (Flinders Ranges, SA). The colours, contours and ruggedness of the area are breathtaking, as are the sunsets/sunrises. The heavy atmosphere evokes feelings that seem physical, yet are intangible … felt, but remain unseen. While painting, I was thinking of a comment someone made regarding Ikara … that the dry, hot, ancient surface hides the promise of life underground, waiting for the rains to sprout life again. This is what I hoped to capture; the atmosphere that is above and below the earth.

‘Promises of Life in Ambers’ has been painted in a contemporary landscape style. It’s semiabstracted and somewhat naïve, as well. It has been painted on stretched canvas using acrylics, inks and charcoal. I’ve used rags, brushes, fingers and palette knives while creating. The work in both layered and textured. It has been framed (ready to hang) in Tasmanian Oak and measures approximately 64 x 95 x 4 cm.

The accompanying photos show the painting in full, in sections, in (virtual) situ and in stages of the painting process. As always, my Australian landscapes are painted with respect to country and First Nations people.
