Red Kangaroo Head Portrait Black & White – He stood looking at me suddenly bounding towards me, startling me – but more interested in what I had in my hands rather than aggressive.
A Limited Edition Print (25) fine art photograph by Elizabeth McNamee.
Red kangaroos (Macropus rufus) are large animals with extremely long and powerful hind legs and feet. Their tail is also long and muscular but their front limbs are short. When moving fast they hop on their hind legs, using their tail as a counterbalance, and when moving slowly they use their tail as an extra limb, taking their weight on their front limbs and tail while hopping their hind feet forwards. Â Males appear maroon with a white face and belly. Females are bluish gray in colour and are smaller and faster than the males.
Females have one baby at a time, which at birth is smaller than a cherry. The infant immediately climbs into its mother’s pouch and does not emerge for two months. As they grow, joeys’ heads and feet can often be seen hanging out of the pouch.
They live in Australia’s deserts and open grasslands, gathering in groups called mobs. The Red kangaroo is faced with no major threats, and it continues to be an abundant and widely distributed species. Â This species numbers’ are stable today and it is classified as least concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List.
The unique story surrounding each animal portrait comes with the print.
