Red Right Hand shows how a negative space framed by the subject can become the out of focus, focus. My original idea for this painting was to make the background, green negative space the focal point, however that plan came unstuck when I ‘nailed’ the hand so well. Most artists know that other than faces, hands are the most difficult body feature to depict. So this painting turned out to be all about the hand.
