Rocky Gorge’ Ikara – an ancient land by Meg Shaw

Reduced from $1050 to $735.

Honourable Mention at Geelong Art Society ‘Burst of Nature’ Exhibition, July 2023.

This painting is part of my Fissure Series on stretched canvas and is framed in plantation Tasmanian Oak – approximately 65 x 80.5 x 4. It’s a mixed media art work (acrylic paint, gesso, ink and charcoal). I used brushes, palette knives, rags and fingers/hands as my tools. The colour palette is: black, cream, white, olive, aubergine, paynes grey, teal and organge/yellow ochres. I use an assortment of paint,  but mostly an environmentally friendly brand.

The style is a semiabstracted, contemporary landscape. My approach is multilayered and textured, with an eye for lines and facets to create movement. I painted ‘Rock Gorge’ from both remembered and imagined images of Ikara, Flinders Ranges, SA – a favourite place to visit.

An atmospheric and intuitive artwork, it features impressions of eucalyptus trees, rugged rocks and deep gorges from this beautiful and ancient environment. As with other paintings in my Fissure Series, I’ve attempted to connect what is above the ground with what is below, plus intangible themes.

I’ve included hints of smoke as a mark of respect to First Nations people and their practices of cool burns and ceremonial occasions.

‘Rocky Gorge’ will be posted to you protected in a case, wrapped in recycled bubble wrap and packed in recycled cardboard. As I live in rural Tasmania now, please allow a little more time for delivery. Thank you.

The photos show the finished painting, situ shots, close-ups, the sketched beginning and the frame. Please note, the situ photos are virtual and meant to show what the painting might look like hanging on a wall.
