The sublime view from Forster Sandhill over looking the ocean and rocks below.
Australian Freestyle Art, “Typified by a large brush, exuberant movement and light” Meredith Howse.
‘Sandhill’ is an excellent example of an artwork in a style I call Australian Freestyle . This style of artwork starts with a textured layered base of thick traditional gesso, painted on with the necessary lines, textures and drawing of the final work.
Using paint application method that can only be described as ‘freestyle’ named for its speed and movement, I use a large brush to apply transparent layers of acrylic paint mixed with mediums allow paint to flow freely with great transparency and to slow drying time.
I then use the lines and contour of the textured underpainting of gesso to apply a third layer of detail with opaque paint. Finally, I finish off with fine lines of detail and a coat of UV resistant glaze.
Australian art has its own identity and more interestingly is geared toward ‘instant online art’. Australian Artists have adapted to this very well. I have felt very strongly for some time that Australian art needs more names to describe its art styles. The styles ‘impressionism’ and ‘realism’ do not adequately describe non-indigenous Australian art. Australian art as a whole is unique to Australia. Which is why you will often hear me refer to my work in the style called ‘Australian Freestyle’.

Framed in light oak frame.
D-Rings and cord on the back.
