‘Secrets of the Seed’ by Tillian

“A seed is a mystery. It is both beginning and end, life and death, everything and nothing. In my painting the deep earth glows where a dream awakens and makes a new life in the sun. From the stars comes life, and when the mystic clock turns the seed opens, thrusting up from the yielding clay, shooting through the witch-hazel* darkness into dazzling extra-terrestrial light”. Tillian
(*Witch-hazel twigs are used as divining rods).

In ‘Secrets of the Seed’, I distill the vitality of organic life into a vibrant field of abstract forms. Painted in 2021, this work occupies a distinctive space between biomorphic abstraction and mythopoeic landscape. Sweeping arcs, root-like textures, and translucent layers of green, red, and blue conjure the moment of germination — the primal unfolding of life from hidden origins.
The composition resists stable figure-ground relationships, embodying instead a dynamic interplay of containment and release. Broad, gestural brushstrokes alternate with finely incised linear motifs, evoking vascular systems, root networks, and the unseen energies of growth. Chromatically, the painting balances the explosive warmth of vermilion and ochre with cooler greens and oceanic blues, producing a sense of internal light — a radiance emanating from within the forms themselves.
Influences from mid-20th century biomorphic abstraction, particularly Arshile Gorky and early Lee Krasner, can be traced in the visual language. Yet my work is equally rooted in an Australasian sensibility: a reverence for landscape not merely as scenery, but as a living, mythic force. There is also a strong Jungian undertone — the seed symbolising the ‘prima materia’ of the unconscious, a germinal center of transformation.

Ultimately, ‘Secrets of the Seed’ is a celebration of unseen becoming — a painted meditation on the mysteries of creation, fertility, and the deep-time processes that sustain life. It invites viewers not to look at nature, but to imaginatively inhabit its hidden, mythic heart.

Edges sealed with black lacquer. Satin varnished with UV protection. Unframed. Ready to hang with D-rings and cable. Signed/dated bottom right. Certificate of authenticity.
