Sentinals by Meg Shaw

Sentinals is a contemporary landscape, painted in a impressionistic style with a contemporary expressionistic feel. It is #4 in a series of paintings inspired by scenes from The Otways in south-western Victoria – Wadawurrung and Gadubanud countries.

In this painting, I’ve paid homage to the beauty of tree snags which, even in death, continue to provide shelter for animals and nutrients to the surrounding vegetation.

This particular scene is a collection of visual images from my memories of walking on, or near the track and enjoying the mood, the fresh air and the soft, peaceful sounds. I’ve included a hint of forest in the background, but in the foreground there are rock formations to give the impression of the gorge leading down to the creek. Of course, as mentioned, these scrubby snags are the feature, this time. As is my approach, I have created a scene which is a celebration of the Australian environment. There are hints of subjective emotions within for viewers to interpret as they choose.

I’ve used mainly Australian made, environmentally friendly acrylics along with other mediums. The winter palette gives a moody feel. My tools are brushes, fingers, rags and palette knives. ‘Sentinals’ is painted on a handmade, hand stretched canvas – all made from quality materials. The painting measures approximately 93 cm x 61 cm, is unframed and ready to hang (using D rings and picture wire). The canvas side edges are painted to continue the landscape scene. The top and bottom edges are painted with a charcoal coloured paint. The back of the painting is exposed (see photos). The whole piece has several coats of a durable satin finish to protect the artwork.

The photos show the painting stages, the finished painting, close-ups and the painting in situ. Please note that the situ shots are virtual and meant to show what the painting might look like hanging on a wall. ‘Sentinals’ will be sent to you via Auspost wrapped in recycled bubble wrap, packed in a palette and wrapped in recycled cardboard. As I live in rural Tasmania now, please allow a little more time for postage. Thank you.

Some comments I’ve received about ‘Sentinals’ so far are; immersive, transfixed, quiet moody world, listening to whispers and tales the fog gently tells.
