It has been a prison for Convicts, and a ship building and repair site from the age of sail up until the 1980s.
The island is able to be explored after a short ferry ride, and cranes, industrial buildings, and machinery makes an interesting tour.
These large metal structures were probably used in the stamping or bending of metal for ships, but is now slowly rusting in the weather.
They remind me of the pictures I have seen of Easter Island, with the large statues standing vigil over the island. Sides white, wire across the back.
