Serpentis by Karen Chappelow 122 x 122cm

Inspired by Australian Flora and Fauna

Serpentis is transformed, her hair a river of snakeskin, naked as if the very skin like the snake has been renewed. Surrounded by the Flowering Xmas tree- her companion, spider orchids and Acacia flowers symbolizing birth and rebirth.

After researching the Native Australian seasons, I was inspired to symbolise a combination of modern and ancient references.  The Noongar season of Kambarang covers Oct-Nov period and the yellow acacia, kangaroo paws and orchids are plentiful. The flowering Xmas tree is now seen signalling the season of Birth. Orange and Yellow are the colours representing this season, snakes and reptiles are out to play.

This respect and harmony with the natural environment has been occurring for centuries, with the current state of our environment we should listen to those that came before us and respect their practices, knowledge as well as the flora and fauna of our country. We can all flourish when we respect all.
