Ships of the Desert by Carol Forster

This sculptural vase is part of a series based around the landscapes of Outback Australia.  Camels are often referred to as “Ships of the Desert” due to their ability to survive in the desert on limited water.

Techniques used include wheelthrowing with a combination of fine porcelain and textured terracotta clay.  The porcelain surface has been water etched to reveal ghostly images of camels, forming a contrast against the textured terracotta clay.  It is more a sculptural form than a vase due to the unglazed surfaces making it unsuitable as a water container.

Ships of the Desert is an original, ceramic sculptural vase.
