‘Snappy Gums’ by Tillian –

Sunrise painting on two panels made in the forest at Berrima. I have included a photograph of the trees that provided inspiration. Known locally as ‘Snappy Gums’, their sinuous arms spread gracefully in every direction.

In ‘Snappy Gums’, I conjure the resilience of the ‘snappy gum’ through a vibrant abstraction that pulses with colour, movement, and ecological memory. Rich ochres, viridians, and earthen reds evoke the fire-prone bushlands of the interior, while the painting’s flowing forms suggest bark, flame, and arterial networks all at once. The diptych format creates a visceral tension—both division and continuity—inviting viewers into a rhythmic dance between structure and spontaneity. Through gestural brushwork and layered translucencies, the painting offers not a depiction of landscape, but an intimate encounter with its animacy and mythic charge. Referencing Indigenous land practices and post-war abstraction in equal measure, this work situates the bush as both subject and co-creator—an active field of regeneration, story, and embodied wisdom.

Bold, gestural and fiery, this is a statement piece to uplift and invigorate an interior space.

Edges sealed with black lacquer. Satin varnished with UV protection. Ready to hang with D-rings and cable. Signed/dated right panel. Certificate of authenticity.
