Spread Your Wings & Fly by Rosemary Legat – Acrylic paint, gouache & watercolour crayons on stretched canvas.

I started to create two intuitive layered bases during the morning of a full day’s Life Drawing & Painting Workshop at the Gasworks Arts Park, Melbourne with Art of Flow.

I kept to the same limited colour palette on both bases as well as when I was developing both paintings later.

I’ve only participated in Zoom sessions previously therefore creating and painting alongside 17 other artists was something very different for me and very special too.

In the second part of the day our delightful model held two long poses which gave participants the opportunity to embed, or start to embed, her poses within our layered bases rather than just sketch or paint her over the top of them.

Spread Your Wings & Fly was the second canvas I started to develop that afternoon. I painted over my detailed intuitive base, quietening down her detailed background and to create the essence of Aurora’s sitting pose.

Unfortunately the amazing day of painting amongst a group of fellow artists had come to the end therefore Spread Your Wings & Fly was developed further during the following week at home.

I enjoyed working with the limited colour palette I had spontaneously chosen for both pieces.

Starting with my two similar intuitive bases I wouldn’t have imagined how different Beauty Isn’t Skin Deep and Spread Your Wings & Fly would look from each other however there is still a cohesiveness between the two.
