The African Lion – Slowly moving through the grasses eye firmly fix on me, just as fascinated with this intruder into his domain as I was with him.  As he slowly moved toward me a shiver ran down my back as I realized I was the menu.

A Limited Edition Print (25) fine art photograph by Elizabeth McNamee.

Is the second-largest living big cat after the tiger. Males are unique among the cat species for their thick mane of brown or black hair encircling their head and neck. The mane darkens with age, and the thicker and darker a mane is the healthier the cat. Both males and females roar — a sound heard as far as 8 kilometers away.

Lions are top predators in their environment and are currently listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In some parts of Africa, lions are classified as “critically endangered” because lion populations are still plummeting at an unprecedented rate.   Unfortunately, with the illegal wildlife trade booming, poachers lurking in the shadows, and trophy hunters paying thousands of dollars to hunt them, lions are disappearing at an alarming rate.

  • The lion population in Africa has decreased by 90% in the last century
  • There are currently only about 23,000 lions left in the wild
  • Lions are extinct in 26 countries across Africa

At the current rate of habitat loss and poaching, African lions could be completely extinct by 2050

The unique story surrounding each animal portrait comes with the print.
