Stranded at Dawn by Paulus Kooij – Calm mornings on the ocean are rare — especially when mist drifts low over still water. One winter morning, during a run, I witnessed such a scene: the air cool and heavy, the horizon blurred into silence. It felt like a moment suspended between states — tranquillity and transience held in quiet tension. This serene calmness with the wonderful warm light poking through the mist motivated me to paint this scene that emerged in my imagination.
The fishing boat entered the composition later, almost as an afterthought. It introduced a human element — not as protagonist, but as witness. The rusting hull caught the sun’s first light: reds, ochres, and soft bronzes flickering like embers of a long-forgotten voyage. The vessel lay becalmed, its plates creaking faintly in the hush, while sunlight glanced from mast and cable, glinting like memory itself.
This is an oil painting with several glazes to enhance the luminous effects. A mounting string is attached at the back. The painting will be varnished before despatch in satin.
