Strange News  by Rebecca James

This is the second in a series of paintings reimagining scenes from the Bible. The Annunciation is a scene in which the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is to conceive the baby Jesus, the son of God.

‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ she asks.

The description of the annunciation in the Gospel of Luke, though compelling, doesn’t say much about the sense of disbelief, fear and amazement Mary must have felt  —  I like this elaborated response from Small Vespers.

“Your words are as strange as your appearance! Strange is the news which your words announce to me!” said Mary to the Angel. “Do not seek to deceive me. I am a virgin, and I know not marriage; yet you tell me that I am to conceive the One whom no spirit can even comprehend! How can I contain within my womb Him whom the immense heavens themselves cannot contain?” …

Strange news indeed.

Acrylic on Canvas. Edges painted dark brown. Wire on back and ready to hang.
