Sunflower Field Sunset by Sam Askin

This is my first botanical painting that is not a simple still life; here, the flowers remain in all their glory in their natural setting. I am in love with experimenting with sunsets and cloudy skies recently. As my better half has pointed out to me, however, I have a bit of a lack of yellow in my dominant palette. Personally I love the blue, grey, green and pastel pink palette I tend to use most often, but then, the colour yellow lends itself beautifully to playing with cloudy sunsets as well! This sunset is actually another picture taken from the reference used for my Sunset Drive piece. I paired it with a reference from a sunflower field near Toowoomba in Southern Queensland. I couldn’t be happier! My favourites pinks in the sky and the flashes of setting yellow sun complement the majesty sunflowers perfectly! The layers of light and dark on the sunflowers catching and missing the light is beautiful, and I get that sense that I strive for in my work, where I feel drawn deep into the scene. It honestly feels very satisying to look at, and as it has been drying I have found myself staring and studying it over and over again!
