Sunshine Beach Boogie Boarding by Sam Askin

Somehow, this is actually the first beachscape I have painted of a surf beach where the waves are the dominant feature of the work. Waves and the ocean (sound, smell, temperature/feel) are really important in my life for a lot of reasons. I can’t think of one that makes them as important as sharing them with my partner and kids. I originally set out to paint this piece as a quick, impressionistic mini of some crashing waves, spray flinging into the air. I got about halfway through and it just felt like something (someone) was missing. So, I decided to add my son back into the work (he was in the original reference photo). There he stands in front of choppy waves that were horrible to body surf or general hang out in… but were perfect for boogie boarding! Not afraid of anything, he is about to try and jump through the first “wave” of crashing water to reach where are breaking, a set or two back. At times I had to pull him through these, which threw me straight back to memories of my own dad doing the same with me on holidays to the Sunshine Coast as a kid. It might be small in size, but there is a hell of a lot going on in terms of memories in this one little artwork!
