Susurration by Lillian Beales – captures the rhythmic whispers of the ocean as waves gently lap the shore. Inspired by the iridescent beauty of the Paua shell—also known as the “ears of the ocean” and a symbol of hope and peace in Maori culture—this piece reflects the way light dances across the shell’s surface, revealing layered hues of mother-of-pearl. Much like my hatched painting method, these shifting colors create depth and movement, echoing the ever-changing tide.

A sweeping gold leaf accent mirrors the sunlit shimmer of the shoreline, adding warmth and contrast. As light changes throughout the day, Susurration transforms, much like the Paua shell, revealing new depths of color and energy. This piece brings a sense of tranquility and wonder, perfect for creating a serene yet dynamic atmosphere in any space.

The original painting is created on locally sourced canvas made with recycled ocean plastic, reflecting my commitment to sustainability. It is finished with a multi-layered resin gloss coat, adding depth and a glass-like finish that enhances the vibrancy of the colors and creates a polished, protective surface.
