Sutherland Creek by Meg Shaw

The inspiration for this original, contemporary landscape painting is simply, my grandfather. He was born in Steglitz, Brisbane Ranges (Wadawurrung Country), in the 1890s. At the time, the family had emigrated from Wales, to Launceston and then onto Steglitz, before finally settling in Footscay. The township of Steglitz was once a thriving goldmining township, with up to 1,500 people, at one time. Now, it’s an uninhabited, historic site for tourists to visit. Sutherland Creek is part of the surrounding the area. Whenever I take a walk through this still natural, rugged and beautiful environment, I think of him and feel a connection.

‘Sutherland Creek’ is an impressionistic painting that is both layered and textured (so, you’ll see brush strokes and scrape marks). It has been painted on a wooden board and in environmentally friendly, Australian made acrylics. I have used a variety of tools –  brushes and palette knives along with my fingers and dabbing rags. The colours are typical to the area – muted blues, greens and browns, with highlights of creams and whites.

The style is impressionistic and the composition was created from a collection of remembered images from the area. I don’t paint en plein air, nor do I copy from photos. Rather, I sketch out shapes with paint directly onto a surface and use my memory and intuitive thoughts to create an image. I wait to hear a story and I hope art lovers see a story.

I set this painting in autumn’s morning light, which is softer and more atmospheric. The recycled pine frame may have minor scratches or bumps, but this is the character of repurposed wood. It has been finished with with a cream coloured, chalk paint that is slightly distressed. ‘Sutherland Creek’ measures approximately 95 x 65 x 3 cm and is ready to hang.

The photos show the whole painting, close-ups, in situ and the frame. Please note: the situ photos are virtual and are intended to show what the painting might look like hanging on a wall.

‘Sutherland Creek’ comes with a certificate of authenticity. It will be sent in a crate, wrapped in recycled bubble wrap and packed in recycled cardboard. It will be posted via a secure courier service or Auspost.
