Sweet As Nectar by Evelyn Hambros

During the trials for Sweet as Nectar, I explored colour contrasts and gestural marks, and the results aligned beautifully with my vision for the piece. Everything seemed to be falling into place.

But when I scaled the work up and executed the plan on a larger surface, something shifted — the composition no longer held together as expected. It’s remarkable how scale, especially in relation to the body, can completely alter the dynamics of a painting.

In the process of removing some of the paint, I discovered an unexpected gift: a delicate staining effect left behind by the ‘error’. It was subtle, organic, and far more evocative than anything I had planned. I embraced it — and it ultimately shaped the final piece. Sometimes, it’s a relief when things don’t go to plan.

Artwork is varnished, providing protection against environmental factors whilst enhancing the pigments in colours.
