The Black Hole Theory According to Mars is a tribute to the Artist’s Cat, Mars Black.  Mars Black is a black oil pain pigment/colour.  Mars Black the cat is a strongly opinionated and dedicated gallery assistant. He earns this title merely by always being in close proximity to the artist as she works.

The Black Hole Theory According to Mars’, straddles two universes. Although he is depicted within the format of an Instagram post, he has sat for a serious portrait.  The white border around the frame, suggest an Instagram post, a platform that is overrun with images of cats being hilarious, its content, fleeting and entertaining.  However, Mars Black, sits as a ‘subject’ for a portrait, his personality has weight, and he engages the viewer. Animals have a palpable ‘intelligence’, a viable presence, made evident by his stated understanding of a Quantum Physics theory to make sense of an empty food bowl. The work brings an element of humour which is an important part of making it through life, and the bright yellow background adds a sunny energy that counterbalances the seated dark form.
