In the act of painting two motions are at play – two delights or imperatives entwining as it were – like a simultaneous rising and falling of two currents. One motion seeks to conceal, to mystify, to withhold and contain; the other seeks to illuminate, to startle, resolve, define. The painter plays with and grapples with these opposing forces, allows them to unfurl around a rigid staff of impunity – his practice, his method, his craft.

Painting for me is an ecstatic mingling of free-flowing opposites and the finished work a mere crystallization – the sacramental remnant preserved after rapturous worship.
