The Essence of memory by Karen Chappelow 100x140cm

My work explores nostalgia as a looping river of memory—an Ouroboros continually consuming and renewing itself. The places we call home exist within this circle, not as fixed coordinates but as shifting emotional landscapes. Like goldfish, whose memories are said to last only moments, we move through life collecting fragments—fleeting colours, scents, doorways, horizons—each one slipping into the next. The Ouroboros reminds us that endings fold into beginnings, that every return home is also a transformation. Through these symbols, I seek to question what we hold onto, what we forget, and how our stories of home are endlessly rewritten by time.

This painting has plenty of textural elements including gold leaf.
