The Hookah Man by Pamela Mitchell – An original charcoal drawing on an acrylic stretched canvas, varnished and ready to hang

My inspiration for this artwork was when I saw this old Indian man sitting on the ground smoking a hookah while I was on a trip in India.
I decided to sketch him as he looked so calm and serene and content. He completely ignored the people walking past and staring at him. There was no tin or hat for coins so he didn’t seem interested in begging for money. I was quite fascinated by him.

I had fun deciding how to present him as an artwork and thought the patterned acrylic background gave enough colour without taking away from the charcoal sketch which I felt best portrayed his character.
Ive always enjoyed drawing and painting interesting faces.
