‘The Stormbird‘ by Tillian

“A synesthetic rendering of the haunting call of the Koel in the Snappy Gum forest at Berrima. Known as the ‘Stormbird’, her call, a loud ascending whistle “KOO-EL”, invariably presages the coming of electrical storms”. Tillian

In ‘The Stormbird’, I conjure a mythic landscape alive with organic vitality and elemental motion. Twisting trees, fiery blooms, and spectral forms suggest a world in the throes of transformation, animated by the unseen forces of nature. Across three interlinked panels, color and gesture dissolve the boundaries between earth and sky, growth and decay, inviting viewers into an immersive meditation on resilience, upheaval, and regeneration. Deep greens, lush crimsons, spectral blues, and flame-like oranges create an immersive and almost synesthetic field. Color does not merely describe form but becomes form — it is a kind of living tissue that binds earth, foliage, spirit, and sky. The Koel itself — abstract yet palpable — appears as a harbinger of change, evoking ancient myths of renewal and environmental cycles.

‘The Stormbird’ triptych is a vibrant, emotionally charged, and intellectually resonant work that sits within the eco-poetic tradition in contemporary art, where landscape is not passive backdrop but active participant – where painting becomes a negotiation with elemental forces rather than a pictorial description of them.

Painted September 2022, reworked March 2023. Signed/dated bottom right. Shipped with certificate of authenticity. Acrylic on three cradled wood panels. Satin varnished with isolation coat. Edges sealed with black lacquer. Ready to hang with D-rings and cable. Unframed.

Each panel 61cm x 91cm x 2cm. Total width of triptych 183cm x 91cm. Overall weight 9kg
