I was in India, marvelling at the colours and history and characters that abound there when I saw this mahout sitting on his elephant waiting for someone to come for a ride in the chair that was perched high on the back of the elephant.

I don’t agree with using these amazing creatures in that way but it is a past practise in India and it was fascinating to see it in person. The elephant didn’t seem to mind, he was just standing there patiently waiting with his Mahout to earn enough for food for the day.

That inspired this painting and I still feel it was worth capturing the image. I hope you feel that way too.
