Julie Rees’s painterly photographic artwork depicts surreal cloudscapes reminiscent of star gazing where the mind can easily drift into a contemplative state. A channelled poem corresponds with each work as a guide to navigating the unseen world via our internal world. Overall, Cloud Gazing (2022) highlights the ephemeral nature of clouds and shares parallels with life’s transient conditions.

These textured works consist of multi-layered cloud photographs with varying hues and formations gathered over the last two years. The results are otherworldly cloud creations, some pieces are dreamlike while others play out more dramatically. Cloud Gazing (2022) encourages the viewer to observe each work, let the mind wander, and allow images, shapes, or impressions to appear or arise. Reflecting on these images, shapes or impressions, hidden messages can be uncovered within its symbolism, some may be obvious while others may need reflecting upon. By doing this, cloud gazing can be a helpful tool to solve internal problems creatively, allowing space for intuitive insights to flow freely.
