The Satyr’s party trick by Karen Chappelow 42x52cm

The Satyr is often depicted in Greek mythology half man half goat or half human with a tail. Satyrs were the wild lustful companions of Dionysis-god of fertility, wine and theatre.

Classical art of the time represented cultural ideals and as you will see in many a sculpture and painting the penis was small. A larger penis represented foolishness, lustfulness. As the joker and drunken spirit the Satyr is represented as such.

An urn has been discovered from 500-490 BC which represents a Satyr with a wine cup perched on his nethers and I couldn’t resist.
