The show must go on by Karen Chappelow

Caught in a moment, preoccupied with the past and the memories we hold, memories of those memories. The smell of citrus and wood in the air-the spicy elegance of the scent lingers (at least that’s what the ad says). The actor has left the stage, makeup is smeared but the mask-that smile stays painted on, at least for the moment. The emotions imprisoned within, yet small cracks are appearing. We are all the central character of our main show, the show must go on!

I am exploring the randomness of words, how David Bowie and William S Burroughs composed works and the Dadaists movement in general. So I placed a call out to my friends asking a few questions (below) and then cut each answer into strips, numbered them and then randomly selected 1-5 of each category to compile a nonsensical paragraph in which then I am trying to make sense of nonsense-here is the first one.

  1. Favourite song, lyric or line-“The show must go on, inside my heart is breaking, my makeup maybe flaking, but my smile stays on”
  2. Favourite movie/book quote-“Last night I dreamed of Mandalay again”
  3. Favourite slogan/protest line or statement-“where would you be without Brut 33”
  4. What advice would you give your younger self-“what is normal, we are all weirdos so embrace your weirdness”
  5. What would you do differently-“learn to say no earlier”
